end of the world / wonder jam twins - john

One of Austin’s best art spaces- Gallery Lombardi - is bidding farewell to the digs that have been home to thousands of avant and conventional art shows alike.  They are waving goodbye to a space that has been rented by graffiti artists, record labels and Austin bloggers for a reasonable price and with great results.  Good times have been shared by many here, thankfully there is promise of relocation but nothing can replace late night drunken train track parties.  Before the current location is torn down and room is made for even more condos, the Gallery threw a huge three-day party full of ambition, memories, and music.

I had the pleasure of Djing the first night of parties along with some amazingly fun bands: She, Sir, A Featherweight Burden and most notably and crazily- the Wonder Jam Twins.  Three dudes (2 wizards and one Oblong Boy who make extremist rock with chimes, synthesizers, guitars and ride the Austin Zolo revival wave.  Homeboys had epic entrance and exit music for their 15 minute set.  It was intense.  Check out the homemade craftsmanship of the wraparound tube instrument… it has a microphone taped to the bottom, a horn bell at the top and the sound travels thru a multitude of effects pedals. It is unlike anything else.  He would hit different parts of the tube with a drumstick to make different pitched sounds and then loop and manipulate the sounds with his samplers etc…

These young men have an intense uniqueness that the world may not be ready for yet… I don’t think that they really care though.  There are no recordings and no “myspace”.  All I have is these pictures.  They say it all.  Totally Wreck appears to be some sort of umbrella/collective they are involved in, but their webpage is meant to confuse you not to educate you.

See the photos of Wonder Jam Twins, She, Sir, and Featherweight Burden here.

Thanks for dropping by the site.

the laughing and single frame at emos - john

Two people run PartyEnds.  I live in Austin and Luther lives in Dallas.  If you ever are not able to see one of our names next to the title of the post, a good way to tell if it’s me is if the event happened a long time ago.  You see, I have a really bad habit of waiting to type things up.  For instance these pictures of this great show have been sitting around my house since November 4th 2006.  The Laughing and Single Frame played EXCELLENT sets opening up for the less than tolerable 400 Blows.

The Laughing has just finished their recording with the ever-great Cacophony Studios and presumably tracks should be finding their way online soon.  Their set at Emo’s Lounge proves that the band is heading in a positive pattern of increasingly tighter and tighter live performances.  The matching white denim and tiger printed ensembles are this time joined by simple symmetrical teal face paint.  They take their gag seriously and it works for them.  They have a giant tiger on stage with them and practically ignore it.  They have giant crying white tigers on their backs and act as if it is the current trend.  This is going to freak everyone out in a matter of time… once more people can hear them that is…

I am going to go ahead and call them the act that industry folks from out of town at SXSW are going to talking about at pre parties and after parties.  Blogs everywhere are going to flip their shit.  Yeah, that whole story.  I’m calling it.

The bass playing of Laughing member Abram is unmatched.  He carries the melody of the songs in a way that no other bass player in Austin can compete with.  It is amazing to see him go up and down the fret board sneaking in riffs and variations on the tune the way normally associated with a flamboyant lead guitarist.  The Laughing is mountain of talent.  Drums-check, vocals- check, mustaches/beards-check, mini synth- check.

Single Frame is in between guitarists right now so this was their first performance without one.  For a few songs I found myself filling in the missing guitar parts in my head but for the most part the two man configuration sounded fantastic.  The Single Frame energy was as present as ever and the synthesizer parts were able to take a more assertive stand.  The duo bounced thru their set with such proficiency and ability that the crowd seemed to feel a little sorry for out-of-town headlining band 400 Blows.

Please stay tuned to PartyEnds for the Laughing MP3s and

bliss out! - john

There is a seriously great show this Saturday December 2nd 2006 at the Red Scoot Inn in Austin TX.

It will feature the best in ‘dreamy psyche, indie twee goodness, and electronic ambient sweetness.’  The event is billed as “Bliss Out” and is curetted by man about town and friend to all involved in Austin music- Miguel.

Here is the lineup as Miguel describes it:

  • THE SERIOUS DATERS - (featuring Laurelin of the Shells)- So adorable, so lovable. The songs will get your head swaying and smiling from ear to ear.
  • OPERATOR - Post apocalyptic pop for a new age!
  • STHIL  - Frantic mellodrone to soothe all savagery
  • MEJETAIRLINER -Orchestral Ambient opuses.

I should admit that in the excitement of this great lineup that there is some nepotism involved- STAY GOLD will be Djing as well.

There has not been this solid of a lineup at the red scoot inn since last SXSW and that was with big shot indie bands…. this is going to pull of a crazy good night with all Austin acts.  Visit their web pages and try to look me square in the eye and tell me you don’t think it will be a night to remember.  Try it.

ho ho s-ho-ws - luther

It's that time of year again and, shockingly as ever, Christmas is just around the corner, bringing with it all the staples and franchises we have grown to love: the over hyped toy (PS3?), all those good movies they've been holding out on us, Black Friday, and, of course, the Christmas Shows. Every year, the local bands get together with one more excuse to play a big show (sometimes even called a festival), with a long lineup of bands that you might not go see by themselves, but when all lined up in a convenient "two birds for your one stone" sort of row, you just can't pass it up. There are some good values to be had, if you know how to handle them.

Sometimes put together by labels, sometimes by the clubs, sometimes even including an nice headlining "name", here is what I've found for you greedy little elves so far:

Starlight Mints / Pleasant Grove / Baboon / The Marked Man / Record Hop / Stumptone / Dove Hunter / Red Monroe / Ghostcar

Fishboy ( one of my local favorites ) / Eat Avery's Bones / Hardin Sweaty and the Ready to Go / Cavedweller / Brooke Opie

Denton's Fishboy

  • 12.16 / End Of The Year Blow Out and Toy Drive / The Door ( if your into that sort of thing / have to go see your little brothers band so he'll stop nagging you ) / Dallas: $10

Oceans Firing / Foreign Oren / Waiting For Dawn / Enter The Collector / The Embassy / The News Can Wait / For Deceit For Despair / Strangers In The Attic / A Road Less Traveled / Erased / Behold My Beloved

  • 12.17A Very Buzz Oven Christmas / the Plano Center / Plano: $?
Eisley / The Feds / The Gazelles / Kessler / Upside / Darby and friends

Yeah, I know some of these kind of suck. There aren't too many announced so far, but check back, and I'll try to keep you posted. I mean, this is without all the pre-pubescent-metal / Pimpadelic fan-boy shows, but there will be more good ones to come (I think / pray ).

Just for good measure ( and to make up for including anything about Buzz-Oven ), heres an MP3 from my favorite of the bunch, Fishboy:

lightness - luther

Real quick, before I leave work: here is the new (and only, so far) music video for the new single Lightness from the full length album of the same name by Austin's Peter and the Wolf. Part of what might be a bit of a media push, you can check out our little blurb about his instore the other night here and some more music here. Keep an eye out at Party Ends, we'll tell you where and when you can get the album if you like this video as much as we do.

instores tonight - luther

Hey, don't forget about the Jeremy Enigk and Tim Kasher instores tonight at Good Records in Dallas. At 4pm and 6pm, respectively. I'm gonna miss the Enigk (supporting his second solo album since Sunny Day Real Estate) cause I'll be at work, which really blows, but I'll try and get into the Tim Kasher part. I get out of work at 5:30, so it's gonna be a tight squeeze. I know it's gonna be paaaacked, but check back for some photos tomorrow. Right, into the frey ( not the cheesy-assed boyband ).

They will both be at the Gypsy Tea Room tonight.

king dork news - john

When I heard that pop punk mastermind Dr. Frank (Frank Portman) wrote a book I went immediately to the young adult section of the bookstore and picked up a copy.  It is absolutely brilliant.  Especially if you consider it was written by a musician who has been critically panned for decades.  Please pick up a copy of King Dork here

The book is a coming of age about a guy who hates Holden Caulfield, lost his dad in a unexplained death, and spends time with his buddy (best. side kick. character ever) making up cool sounding band names, albums and stage names.  I can’t help but compare it to a high school Nick Hornby masterpiece of High Fidelity proportions.  It has more music banter than you can shake a stick at, it has detective adventures, it nails awkward teen angst, it has amazing boy/girl aspects, but above all- the humor is spot on.  It was only a matter of time before I gushed about this masterpiece on the site but I find myself a little cheerless about the circumstances…

Will Ferrell’s production company has optioned King Dork for a movie film.  I can only imagine what the paycheck for ol Dr. Frank ended up being… but it looks like the ball is rolling to get King Dork onto the silver screen. I acknowledge that the book would indeed be marketable in movie form but it is just so risky to take something that good and maintain the goodness.   And it is also a slippery slope. Sure High Fidelity transferred well to the big screen but good lord did it ever SUCK as a Broadway musical

The 14-year-old dork protagonist must be cast very carefully.  He must not be a Culkin. He must not be Haley Joel Osment.  He must not be that asshole from Jerry McGuire.  Surely with a production company headed by Will Ferrell I can believe that these things won’t happen but my paranoid mind worries nonetheless.

At least I know the soundtrack will kick ass and there will probably be a Will Ferrell cameo.

Wha Haaapened? - luther

So, I really love Christopher Guest. Since This is Spinal Tap redefined comedy, he has been in some way responsible for some of the funniest moments dedicated to celluloid. You can imagine that, when it's been as long as it has since the last movie ( almost 3 years ) I was pretty excited, as I'm sure most of you were and are, about For Your Consideration, the latest in Mr. Guest's long line of mockumentaries. And I'm here to tell you that, well, don't get your hopes up as high as I did.

I mean, For Your Consideration is good, seriously. The unscripted method of getting together witty, talented people and giving them the bones of a story results in some truly humorous moments. But, the subtly of the comedy is sometimes so substantial that some 'jokes' just come off as awkward and silly, and, while there is a slow-burn quality to that, during the movie I just ended up really bored.

The real disappointment to me, and I think a great misjudgment by the production team, was that %80 of the really funny one liners were in the couple of trailers that I saw over and over again months before the film even came out. There was some great work by every member of the cast, the seasoned Guest veterans and especially from surprise additions such as Ricky Gervaise. I don't want to give away the last few surprises, but I will say that the funniest moments in the film were carried, in my opinion, by John Micheal Higgins, and ( of course ) Fred Willard.

I would suggest you go and see this movie, because it's really good by the standards of the modern state of big budget comedy. Just don't go into the theater thinking that this could be the best Christopher Guest movie ever, because it isn't. Bear that little piece of advice in mind, and you should enjoy it a lot more than I did ( and maybe drink some coffee or shoot some NoDoz first, too ).

And just to acknowledge that this review is both lopsided and vague, here is what I'm going to make up for it with:

hollyhood - john

MTV is joining forces with Academy Award-winning rap group Three 6 Mafia for what is sure to be a series of Newlyweds proportions called “ Adventures in Hollyhood.”

The series will follow the deeerty southerners as they move from their Memphis homes to Los Angeles.  This shit will drop early 2007.

Please download this track below that Three 6 did with port Arthur’s own Underground Kings back from 2000.

31 knots - john

It is no secret that I am a big dork for Polyvinyl Records… Some of my favorite indie bands rep their set ( Rainer Maria, Saturday Looks Good To Me, all things Kinsella) so I am very pleased to report that the group 31 Knots lives up to my high Polyvinyl expectations.

31 Knots is from Portland despite their DC post punk sound.  Their angular guitar, off kilter rhythms and amazing singing landed the group on tour with Q and Not U which eventually led to their record deal with Polyvinyl.  Musically, they are Fugazi mellow at points then drop into Fugazi intensity. All of the songs are great on the Polemics EP, and it looks like Polyvinyl is selling it with a t shirt online here

check it out and thanks for visiting the site!

Side note: Congratulations to Mitchell from Austin for winning the Hourly Radio PartyEnds Contest!  He was randomly selected as the winner of a sexy sexy t-shirt.  Thanks to all of the contestants!

wolf instore - luther

Just a quick word about the instore at Good last night. I'v been to a bunch of instores, and I have to admit that, while I do like his music still, Mr. Red Hunter didn't really blow me away. The Peter and the Wolf instore was a ramshackle little collection of songs thrown together without much consideration (or guitar tuning for that matter) representing just how much Red seemed to care about making a good impression on the small group that gathered last night. Preempting his show later that night at the less than cool Club Dada (I will never dissasociate it with middle aged men and thier Beatles cover bands), the intimate setting didn't seem to bring out the best in his one man plus a girl going 'ohhhhh' show. I will still make it a point to see him when he has a full band though, because there was still a sparkle of just what the music could be in the right setting.

Check out his new full length Lightness, you can buy it here.

He did have some killer T-shirts for sale though, very nice, I like. You can buy them online here.

Also: The opening act was really quite a pleasant surprise. A young lady from the same fine town by the name of  Dana Falconberry. Pleasantly catchy folky/blues tunes stripped down and layed out by a beautiful and worldly voice, this girl is someone to watch out for.

the goods - luther

Hey, my Dallas peeps, make sure you clear your calendar this evening and stop by the illustrious Good Records to check out the kind of buzzy, but very talented Peter and the Wolf. An outfit out of Austin, these folky kids are freekin' a bunch of bloggers out, so listen to this track, and go to the show, and see what all the hoopla's about (It's actually pretty good, though).

MP3 - Peter and the Wolf - Paint the Town -

The instore is at 6pm.

And don't forget that later this week, on Thursday, is the Hidden Cameras at Good. Also at 6pm.

these men are islands - luther

I know it's a little late, but I still thought it was worth mentioning that the Islands show at Good Records last Saturday was off the fucking hook. These Montreal kids know how to throw down some recorder shredding, and mix it up with a bunch of catchy pop tunes, and even a little dope rhyming.

Sleepily waltzing through a good number of originals and some great covers (including a little classic Kinks action), former Unicorns front man Nick Diamonds lead the pseudo-supergroup's charge in one of the best free shows I've seen in a while. With the extra 1up bonus of getting to hear Subtitle (Giovanni Marks) spit like the villain that he is on Where theres a Will Theres a Whale Bone, we couldn't ask for much more; and it all just left the eclectic thirty or so people brave enough to skip work/school to make it to the 2pm show panting for more. I hear there was a good turnout at the Denton show Saturday night at Hailey's, though I was priorly engaged and couldn't make it out there; but they always bring it, so I'm sure it was incredible.

The only reviewing that will be involved in our post today will be for Mr. Diamond(no relation)'s drastic new hair cut, and his shoes:

Check out our photo gallery here, and go see them when they roll through your town. Plus, check out this great music video, displaying their talent for creating some of the catchiest hooks on the market.

chain drive - john

Everyone loves live free music and cheap booze.  It’s a fact.

The greatest offering to the Austin free music and cheap booze alter has been from local Leather Bar the Chain Drive, a bar that once boasted a strict "Levi's, leather or Latex" dress code.  This bar, tucked away from all others in Austin is typically home to “Bears” more and more recently on Wednesday nights the crowd has been a mix of weirdo/indie rock fans with ironic mustaches and Chain Drive regulars with less ironic mustaches.

I have heard mixed things about this cross-scene merge; such as the regulars of the Chain Drive are not thrilled to have their haven penetrated by non regulars, but in terms of getting folks out to a bar on a Wednesday night to spend money and see totally solid band line ups, Chain Drive is doing it right, no question.  They are supporting some amazing Texas bands and regulars and non-regulars alike are able to reap the musical benefits.

The bar staff is friendly, the outside patio is fantastic, and the décor of pictures of bears is amazing.  For a while Austin bloggers the Rich Girls Are Weeping (wo)manned the turntables and played a fantastic blend of indie-pop.  Please check out some tunes from some of my favorite bands that have played there, below:

radian-tion - luther

Last night, longtime coming local Dallas band Radiant* had their CD release party at the Granada Theater for their new full length We Hope You Win, and I think it was a hit. For such a large venue, everyone was pretty much packed in like a sardine can with a smoke machine as these guys finally showed just what paying your dues results in: a solid, entertaining, professional, and tight performance. Radiant* have been doing this a while, and it shows. Between the stellar light show, silly background projections, and the galvanized crowd, the night went off without a hitch, and, I think, set the stage for a band with a real shot at success in this crazy modern world of music biz-nas. Radio friendly and meticulous, listen for these guys first single off their new album (and their previously released EP The Sound of Splitting Atoms), Way You Make Me Feel. It's damn catchy.

The new CD seemed like it was selling like hotcakes at the show and that looks like, at this point, that's the only way to get it. So get to one of these upcoming show dates and buy one. Also, go be their myspace friend here and listen to the music. Before the band played last night, they also debuted the video for their new single, which you can watch on their myspace page as well.

Upcoming shows:

11.19 - Stubbs (austin record release show) / Austin, TX

11.25 - Eskimo Joes w/ Hero Factor / Stillwater, OK

12.05 - The Deli w/ Hero Factor / Norman, OK

bad news on the hourly radio - luther

1     So, in a realm far out of the control of we, humble writers, here at Party Ends, a great tragedy has befallen the land. Our currently running contest for The Hourly Radio has hit a little snag. The show that you, our readers, had the chance to win tickets to has been canceled. Don't be too dismayed though, since you can still win a really cool Hourly Radio T-shirt, and we might just throw in some deck Party Ends swag, and any other cool crap we might have lying around the office as well; so please feel free to keep writing in to partyends@gmail.com with the phrase 'the Hourly Radio' in the subject line for your chance to win some really cool shit.

And don't forget to check out the band's Myspace and catch their non-canceled shows that are coming up not too far away from that one:

Nov 17th, at the Wreck Room in Fort Worth, TX

Nov 25th, at the Conservatory in Oklahoma City, OK

and Dec 16th, at the Gypsy Tea Room here in Dallas, TX

mickey avalon - john

photo: PartyEnds.com

Mickey Avalon brought out a bizarre gathering of people to Emo’s Lounge most of whom I would guess had never set foot in any of the Emo’s enterprises ever before.  Who were they?  I have no idea.  I saw an awful lot of former sorority girls and tucked in ironed shirts going ape shit and freak dancing.  I did not go to freak dance per se…

I went because:

*I think his whore hop (please lord, let this term I just made up catch on) is funny.

*I like that he has “thank you” tattooed ‘thug life’ style above his genitals.

*I have been liking music lately that is horribly offensive.

From the looks of the crowd, I would have guessed that he has a song on a crappy expensive hair product commercial or some shit.  But oh well.  I had a blast watching the former male prostitute go all Scott Weiland on the stage.

Avalon’s DJ warmed the crowd up nicely with some serious jamz.  I was most impressed by “Gold Digger” with the first few bars of “Closer” looped over it. Avalon came out with a half empty bottle of booze played all the good hits, talked about wanting some prescription pills, played some more filthy sexual songs, the Emo’s security guard almost kicked some dude’s ass for smoking indoors… then before I knew it the packed crowd dispersed and it was all over.

Emo’s lounge doesn’t get the same caliber acts the main Emo’s does all the time but I am finding myself having more and more fun at the Lounge.  It is typically free, the sound is always good, the bathrooms are huge and clean, and the bar staff are top notch.  Won’t you please welcome Emo’s Lounge into your hearts?

Here are some dope Mickey Avalon tracks:

the boxing lesson - john

Here’s a local band to check out: the Boxing Lesson.  They are new to me, but have been a putting out music since 2003 and are able to boast about playing with the likes of American Analog Set, Coco Rosie and Lambchop among others…  After relocating to Austin from LA, songwriter Paul Wackawsky recruited two others to help flesh out his songs and the results are impressive.

They have been playing with some good looking shows around Austin (shared bills with Just Guns, the Story Of, etc.) and more notably has just put out a very strong release called ‘Songs in the Key of C.’ All 8 songs are full of guitar, analog synth and sampling enthusiasm!  As a result of being influenced by Joy Division and My Bloody Valentine AND using primarily multiple guitars and electronic instruments… the album comes off lush with sound.

If you take prevailing rhythms and progressions, layer sincere vocals, driving keys and sequences straight from a Granddaddy album you are looking the Boxing Lesson square in the eye.  Remember to keep your left up.

Please check out my favorite track from Songs in the Key of C below and visit the Boxing Lesson on Myspace.

tickles your fancy feast - john

Ay! Ay! Ay!

When Stay Gold takes over Emo’s Lounge, we book a live musical act.  Previous groups have been Valhalla, Economy, and Fancy Feast.  I cannot get enough of Fancy Feast. Fancy Feast is the solo project of Cari Palazzolo who was/is half of the twin combo of front women who lead the amazing band Belaire.  With Belaire on a break while one twin is in NY and the rhythm section is living the good life with Voxtrot, Cari has been staying plenty busy.

She scored the music for (local theatre group) Yellow Tape's dance epic ‘We are Normal, Cha Cha Chaaaa’ and got all sorts of positive reviews around town.

Her score included a mix of Fancy Feast tracks as well as stripped down Belaire songs.  This post is partially my penance for not getting off my ass and going to see it.  I chose Flavor of Love 2 reruns over seeing live, innovative, thought provoking theatre.

There is a full length Fancy Feast album that gets handed out on a CD-R at shows that is amazingly fun.  Her music is delightful hip-hop, low fi pop that is so energetic live it’s not even funny… Perfect for any house party.

Please check out some Fancy Feast hotness now before you hear about it from some stranger on the street.

central booking - luther

I don't know if I've mentioned the seemingly omnipresent the Party parties here in Dallas/Denton before, so I'm gonna do it now to be sure and cover myself for when you can't seem to hear about anything else and I can say "I told you so".

The fliers are everywhere, and they are always cool, with stylish photography and design, representing a grime/art/skate/other-underprivileged-subcultures party and scene  headed up by the dopest Djs and emcees around. Underiding all of this is a promotions company called Central Booking, who's name keeps popping up in everything I look at lately, and seems to have it's finger on the thumping pulse of local youth culture. These kids know whats up, so go check them out right now. Be their friend. Read their blog, and keep an eye here on Party Ends for their name, because I'm pretty sure we'll be talking about them some more very soon, and I can't wait to see what there is to cover next.

In the mean time, check out these mix tapes from some of the Central Booking contemporaries, and check out their myspaces too:

kaos radio and machine gun hand - john

I am stuck in the middle of a marathon on E! on the 101 best Hollywood Secrets so I am inclined to share one of Austin’s.  Austin may or may not have a pirate radio station.  It might or might not be called KAOS and it might or might not be available to listen to on FM at 95.9 or online here. Anyway, this hypothetical station which if existed would indeed be sticking it to the FCC man much like the PartyEnds favorite flick Pump Up The Volume is full of good surprises.  The diversity in programming is spectacular.  You have gutter punk one show and bizarre space new wave rock the next.  We salute you KAOS radio.

There was a benefit for the station at Snake Eyes Vinyl (see above mural photo!)  on September 3rd 2006.  It was big fun.  The Laughing played their second show at this benefit… hard to believe considering how ‘buzz worthy’ they are only a short time later…  more on that all over this site later…

Another band that played the benefit deserves a nod: Machine Gun Hand from Duncanville TX.  Straight up Rock and Roll complete with guitar solos behind the head.  Anytime someone goes out of their way to play the strings with their tongues they will get my respect.  The band playing live is much better than their current tracks that are up online because of the crazy energy.  Keep an eye out for these guys- they are playing the Galaxy Club in Dallas on November 18th.

This is my salute to you Machine Gun Hand.  I salute your awesome rock band name.  I salute your bitchin’ Darkness (RIP) cover.  Most of all I salute your devotion to pirate radio.  Not that Austin would have such an institution or anything.

yelle on toast - luther

So my good friend Eric turned me onto this hot, sort of new chica called Yelle from Cote Ouest, France. Though I don't know French, I know these songs are the joint and merit your full and upright attention. Dirty synths, phat beats, and glitchy twitchy snares and stabs abound, lending energy akin to that of M.I.A. and Uffie. On Source Records, what I've gathered from the mostly French speaking web site, is that there is a 4 song EP out called Je Veux Te Voir, and it's doing relatively well in France.

The beats are handled by Euro jack-of-all-trades, Grand Mariner, who is well established in the electro/pop/club scene in France. This MP3 of the lead single Je Veux Te Voir,  translated to Short Dick Cuizi (make of it what you will), was remixed by Tepr and isn't available on the single.

ben folds & corn mo in austin - john

Ben Folds and Corn Mo rolled into Austin TX and played a sold out show at Stubbs Friday November 3rd.  The show was full of crowd favorites, funny jokes, stories and importune jams on a brand new 2000 dollar shiny red synthesizer, which Mr. Ben was very set on getting his money’s worth out of.

Corn Mo warmed the packed audience nicely with his glam pitched and Tiny Tim novelty singing.  Songs varied in subject matter from mechanical horses from the future to making out with Victorian ladies via time travel.  Did I mention the word novelty?  I had previously seen Corn Mo open for They Might Be Giants at Stubb’s where he concentrated more on playing the accordion, perhaps to better set the stage for a band who uses one most of the show… on the same token- he played mostly keyboard tracks while preheating the crowd for Ben Folds.  He did get out the old accordion out for an amazing cover of Queen’s ‘We Are the Champions” that won over the group of people around me who were previously less than impressed with his antics.

Listen for the former Denton Texas resident doing guest vocals on the new Ben Folds release with their cover of the Darkness (RIP) anthem “Get Your Hands Off My Woman.”

Ben Folds was as amazing as ever.  As his new band played some Ben Folds Five classics I realized how well they are able to duplicate a historic pleasure that I was never able to take part in- seeing a proper Ben Folds Five concert.  Early in the set they played the rare instrumental track “Theme From Dr. Pyser” and a breathtaking version of “Kate.” Nothing made my wet Ben Folds dreams come true like his solo part of the set that was a beautiful trifecta of music: “Cigarette,” “Eddie Walker” and “Fred Jones Part Two.”  Ben Folds Five lore has it that “Eddie Walker” was the first song that the band recorded and it opened their b-side album “Naked Baby Photos” which has always blown my fucking mind.  How can the first song that gets committed to tape be that amazing?  The song gives me chills in so many aspects.  I was besides my self with dorky fan boyness.  I found my eyes watering up at the line about the trees in the back yard getting cut down when she died.  Oh yeah- I forgot to mention that I love Ben Folds more than any other performing artist.  Ever.  Maybe that should have been my thesis or whatever for this post… oh well.

Ben made up an amazing song about Austin, which touched on breakfast tacos, the new Marriott that will be built soon which will destroy a breakfast taco store, and the BBQ joint/ music venue Stubbs.  He went on to refer to all of his band members and crew by their first names but replaced their last names with “Stubbs.”  He also made a joke about everyone in Austin knowing lots about music so throughout the night he would inform the audience before songs what key they were in.  I am proud to report that their version of “Bitches Ain’t Shit” is in C.

Fairly accurate set list from memory:
  • Trusted- (with excellent sing-along)
  • Learn to Live With What You Are
  • All U can Eat
  • Theme From Dr. Pyser
  • Jesus Land
  • There’s Always Someone Cooler Than You
  • Gone
  • Rock This Bitch
  • Annie Waits
  • You To Thank
  • (German Techno improv song)
  • Landed
  • Cigarette
  • Eddie Walker
  • Fred Jones Part Two
  • Ascent of Stan
  • (Made Up Song About Austin)
  • Kate
  • Bitches Ain’t Shit (audience participation!)
  • Such Great Heights (Postal Service cover)
  • Zak and Sara
  • Bastard
  • Army (audience participation!)
  • Rocking the Suburbs
  • ENCORE:
  • Narcolepsy
  • One Angry Dwarf…

I will stop now- but please know that Ben Folds is a great artist.  His music is an amazing mix of sub-culture and story telling.  My favorite quote about Ben Folds Five come from Ben who described the music as “punk rock for pussies.”  That was also almost the name of this website.  Have a good day and listen to all the Ben Folds that you can.

so, so ready to uff' - luther

Finally, the unspeakably cute and fowl mouthed Uffie is following up her amazingly successful single, Pop the Glock, with yet another single, Hot Chick, out later in November on Ed Banger Records. Following closely in the "less is more" aesthetic of Pop the Glock and Ready to Uff, this shit is so hot and so fresh, you won't even know how to process it in your confined little gangster-rap-ified mind. The overtly sexy, dirty trash talk is back, along with Feedz's killer cuts and a bit more of a nod to his complex of other work.

We should be looking for a full length soon, and I just keep hearing that it's in the works. So lets all keep our fingers crossed and keep and eye open. In the mean time, she is garnering attention from some increasingly "hot" friends, including an upcoming show with Pharell in Tokyo, and a slew of parties and shows all over Europe and Asia.

So, if you happen to be lucky enough to live around there, be sure to take the time to see her before this shit blooooows uuuuup! Seriously. You should be able to order the vinyl single from Ed Bangers when it comes out (though I don't know what that shipping charge is gonna be from Paris, pretty bad, I should expect).

*I tried to get the MP3 for Hot Chick, but so far I haven't been able to find it. In the mean time, check out her Myspace, and listen to the new single there. You won't regret it. I promise, I will find it, though. You can get Pop the Glock here.

And, here is a kind of OK video of Uffie doing Hot Chick and Flip my Chips vs. In Charge:

This listing by no means represent all the cool shows that might be coming up, but this is what I've known about, and might actually go to. I would like to thank TexasGigs.com for listing ten billion events that I had to wade through like a putrid swamp of silly Texas singer songwriters. But, it did lead me to a few shows that I didn't know about at venues I've never heard of, which is very cool.

back on the wagon - john

I love Lagwagon.  One of the best Fat Wreck Chords punk bands ever.  I grew up on them and when they came into Emo’s in Austin in August with the Lawrence Arms. I felt it my duty to go and rock out.  I haven’t been paying close attention to their discography since about 2000 so I was ecstatic to hear so many old favorites throughout the night.

Their show was as tight as ever and the crowd loved a chance to form a Texas sized mosh pit to one of the greats.  Joey Cape will always hold a special place in my heart as far as front men go.  He is the shortest lead singer I have ever seen, and for that - you have to respect him.  Lagwagon is set to release a new album sometime in 2007.

Between Emo’s hosting Rancid about a month earlier and Lagwagon- I have gotten my fill of great punk bands from my past.  All I need is for NOFX and Face to Face to roll thru town (not on any sort of Warp Tour mind you…) and it will be a totally crazy nostogliaic year.

*look for a photo gallery soon, in the mean time, listen to these!

in yo' ghostface - luther

Hey, check out the killer new Ghostface track, the lead off his album, More Fish, set to come out in December. This followup the the socially conscious and commercially and critically successful Fish Scales has some dope collaborations, including a guest spot by his own son, Sun God.

long weekend - luther

Wow, when you take a three day weekend from work, you kind of expect, no matter how much stuff you have planned, that your gonna get some real good, all American R&R time, right? Damn, between our kick-ass, Free Vice screening, all the amenities, good food, and shopping that Austin has to offer, the shitty backed-up highway traffic, power drinking at the Cavern, the Munny show, and the sheer intensity of watching HBO's Big Love, I feel more drained than on a typical Thursday afternoon.

So, the Vice screening went remarkably well; with a strong turnout, we gave away a bunch of cool free shit (vice magazines, the Streets lighters, some DFA 1979 pins, you name it), ate some killer burgers, and drank way more alchohol than seems appropriate in a movie theater. The film was incredible, so much more socially conscious and informative than I would have expected, and everyone seemed to have a really good time. We would like to thank the sponsors, Vice, Alamo Draft House Cinemas, Austinist.com, Hi. Wines, and Waterloo Records, one more time for bringing such a great movie to the big screen with us. Go out and buy this movie, it's incredible; and if you live in Austin, go buy it at Waterloo.

Keep an eye out for more events from Party Ends. In Texas and beyond.

*Watch out for an in depth look at the Munny show, here in Dallas, tomorrow or Tuesday, aswell.*

L Chris and P Rell - john

I have been LOVING the Ludacris and Pharrell jam that is tearing up the Austin airwaves lately…. Especially the part about the “back stroke” and the “breast stroke” (“stroke of a genius!”)  I like to play those tasty Pharrell drums on my steering wheel on my way to and from work- because it is inevitably on the radio.

I digress, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges has official joined the cast of the new Vince Vaughn comedy “Fred Clause.” This is about Santa’s lame brother who will be played by everyone’s favorite loser Vince Vaughn.  Are you ready for this? Can you handle this? Ludacris will play an angry elf.

My man Luda was in Hustle and Flow, and Crash- both got in on the Oscar action- but his next acting move is: an elf.  I am skeptical and disappointed.  I could go on about my disappointment in Paul Giamattii and Kevin Spacey being in the cast too, but as talented as they are- they have yet to break into the Billboard charts with a DOPE Pharrell beat.

tonight tonight tonight - luther

Hey everyone, come out tonight tonight tonight! for the FREE Vice: Guide to Travel screening, in Austin, and the Alamo Draft House. It's gonna be packed with cool kids, good food, strong drinks, and hot ladies; well, no guaranties on the ladies, but it'll be pretty cool. So check it out if your in the area, or start driving now if your more than seven hours away. We'll see you there, and so will all the other sponsors:

Vice, Alamo Draft House Cinemas, Partyends.com, Austinist.com, Hi. Wines, and Waterloo Records.

val 'holla!' - luther

Ok, so we've kind of avoided talking about this pretty fucking incredible band called Valhalla for a really long time simply because they have been, well, 'in process' for something close to a year or more now and we wanted to wait and see where things were going and how they wanted to present themselves to the world. Well, we're tired of waiting, and we want some people to hear these guys, and to show our support for them and what they will someday become.

So this is the first post of what I'm sure will be many in the ongoing legacy of a group of three of the most talented, not to mention nicest, guys I know. Composed of Austin (guitar & vox), JB (bass), and David (drums), this three piece sounds not only bigger than most traditional five pieces, but has one of the tightest, most energetic live shows I've ever seen. The technical abilities of the group shine both on their unofficial EP, thats only really been handed out at a few shows, and in their stage presence. Between catchy hooks and choruses, dense walls of sound are broken down into tripped up beats, funky bass lines, and blazing, complex guitar work, only to be built back up again in order to start it's process over. If you have an opportunity to see these guys play now, do it, because they are poised to blow up overnight, get a premium deal, and sell out good sized venues within a period of months.

After recording their EP here in Texas (in our hometown of Weatherford, no less), the group that formed at Berklee College of Music in Boston has now relocated to Los Angeles, in the heart of whats 'happening'. So watch out, cause these guys are gonna come out of nowhere and end up everywhere. Just a heads up. We'll keep you posted as news develops.

Here are a couple of my favorite tracks from thier EP:

klaxons, klaxoffs - luther

In the sometimes impenetrable world of dancy/dark/euro/electro/cooler than you music, there are a few groups that have stood out to me of late. I try to track these 'bands' (usually more collectives of art students who seem to effortlessly create this stuff, but don't really take it that seriously), but they multiply, interbreed, and pretty much confuse the hell out of me most of the time. But, I have been able to nail down a few that I like, and I think keeping an eye on them might be a good idea.

The first and foremost of these is Klaxons, a UK outfit that is just too fucking cool for school. Not only do they dress wacky, including donning Technicolor cult robes and bad eighties sci/fi movie accessories. The music is frenzied, dancable, and has just enough pop sensibility to keep you from wanting to bludgeon yourself with a glow stick, but just enough edge to keep it interesting and respectable. They have garnered a fair amount of attention in the UK, nabbing an NME cover even, but they still seem to have stayed under the bigger radars here in the US ( much like a number of great UK outfits ). Watch out for these guys to have one big hit here in the US and then continue to go the way of Blur and Pulp. They have it in them. Don't believe me? Check this shit out:

MP3 - Klaxons - Magick (Simian Mobile Disco Remix) -

Some of the other folks who fall much more into the "not as likely to succeed, but still the joint" are:

Crystal Castles, an artsy noise duo from Canada who mix up 8bit wackiness with some blippy beats and incidental sounds. It's cool, if your into that sort of thing (like I am). These kids have what it takes and I can't wait till they really get in there and make a full blown album. These tracks are on repeat in my car. They also have some of the coolest art I've seen on Myspace.

MP3 - Crystal Castles - Air War -

1-800-Dracula, a wacky, wonderful mix of lo-fi samples and video game sounds that actually comes out pretty accessible. With an enjoyable sense of humor to it, it's easier to accept because it doesn't seem to think that it's making the best, most important music ever, like other overtly inaccesible wierdos.

Also, check out the fuckin' hard Pre, the kind of well known AIDS Wolf, and the 'what the hell'-ish Mir. Now, for the fun part, just start cruising their top eight, and the bands who have commented. Hours of time you could be doing something constructive will be gone in no time at all! Yeahay!
