radiant success - luther (dallas,tx)

Recently we brought you a write up on a CD release show for a local band by the name of Radiant. Get used to that name. Radiant has been around for a good while, more than paying their dues, and it shows. In the performance at the Granada theater their admirable perform ace and skill was only matched by their stage presence and professional showmanship. The fruit of which produced a tight, catchy, listenable, and wholly spot-on full length album, We Hope You Win. It's a good thing they worked all that out.

Recently the band was contacted by Jimmy Kimmel live to inform them that they were in the final running for a contest called the Countdown to Number 1, in which the show trys to track down the best unsigned band in America. Shortly thereafter the band was informed that they had won the whole kit and caboodle. At this moment they are in New York City, all expenses payed (for the whole week, at that) doing press conferences and whatnot, with all of it leading up to New Years Eve when they will be the supporting act for My Chemical Romance in Times Square. The subsequent recording of the performance of That Girl will be aired on Jimmy Kimmel. So, yeah, don't expect them to be unsigned much longer. Radiant is gonna be huge, so keep your eyes open, watch Jimmy Kimmel, and buy their new CD here.

a very astronautalis new years - luther (dallas,tx)

One of the many very cool options for New years eve here in Dalls/Fort Worth is actually in Denton. At one of my favorite clubs around, Hailey's, will be one of our favorite performers, Astronautalis. Along with the party-time excelence of Dallas' PPT, who I saw open for Astro on another occasion, setting the small crowd on f-f-fire, and some special guest DJ's. You probably can't go wrong with this little gem of an evening.

Hailey's has a good solid bar, a must for NYE, and there will be a champagne toast at midnight (followed by what is sure to be a slew of sloppy, drunken kisses). So if your in the area, check it out; theres no cover, and it's 21 and up.

top sellers - luther (dallas,tx)

Hey, I just wanted to direct some peeps over to We Shot JR (another fine internet publication that we love) to check out the top 30 sellers this year at Good Records in Dallas. Talk about supporting the local scene, 7 of the top sellers are from DFW, two of which are our boys: the pAper chAse and Astronautalis (he may live in Florida now, but hes a Denton kid to me). Other locals on the list: Midlake (one that will be on my top of the year list), the Polyphonic Spree, Red Monroe, Fair to Midland, and Pilotdrift.

obligatory favorite list! - john (austin,tx)

Time for the obligatory favorite albums of 2006 list!

As if I need to force opinions on you anymore than I already do on this little website, but when in the blogosphere do as the bloggers do... and make lists.

So here is a key to what I liked the most this year.

  • (A) What I speed along on the highway to
  • (B) What I played on loop at work and at times offended my office mates
  • (C) What I had a blast seeing live and consequently made me love the album in a deeper way than I would have otherwise
  • (D) What blew my mind
  • (E) What is in Wikipedia under good plain fun

1. Girl Talk - Night Ripper (A) (D) (E)

2-.Astronautalis - Mighty Ocean & Nine Dark Theaters (B - (not so much offended, but I did have to explain the wonderful irony of a protagonist getting stabbed on a first date) (C)(D)

3- Voxtrot - Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives (E)

4- Bonde Do Role - Melo do Tabaco (A) (B - my coworkers are offended by the Brazilian) (C) (D) (E)

5- the Paper Chase - Now You Are One Of Us (C)

6- LCD Soundsystem - 45:33 (A)

7- Hot Chip - the warning (E)

8- Pony Up - Make Love to the Judges With Your Eyes (A) (E)

9- Spank Rock - yoyoyoyoyoyo (B) (C) (D) (E)

10-Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat (E)

Sorry I did not follow the online blog rules of having the Knife and Joanna Newsome top the charts, but the Paperchase and Astronautalis are way more deserving. All apologies and I can rest easy at night knowing that you now know what I rank as the best of the best for 2006. 1 1

a very merry swissmas - luther (dallas,tx)

Now hear this: Car Stereo (Wars) is one of the coolest things going on in Austin, possibly the Universe, and you should not miss, under any circumstances, this killer New Years Eve party. I know you'll whimper things like "But I live in Canada" or "Que!?", but nothing should keep you from this heap of steaming 90's goodness.11

1 1   Swiss is an Austin super group consisting of members from The Gloria Record, Zykos, etc. I have been told that they play something like once a decade, though I may be exaggerating a smidgen. They will be performing 90's hits from the likes of Pavement, Pixies, The Smashing Pumpkins, weezer and all the “alternative” classics you know and love.

Inside the illustrious Beauty Bar will be Car Stereo (Wars) mixing hip dance tracks with "90's cheese." "Think Prince's "1999" mixed with The Knife's "Heartbeats" and you'll have the idea...or think of The Rapture mixed with Tone Loc or Tag Team."

There will be free portraits taken by Courtney Chavanal, free NYE party favors, 90’s party favors, and free Champagne!

This will be very similar to some of the 90’s Prom’s thrown by Car Stereo (Wars).

At the Beauty Bar in Austin. Cover is $10…but less if you come in groups. Sponsored by The Onion and The Austinist.

never underestimate the value of egg nogg - luther (dallas,tx)

1 Hey, I just wanted to take a few minutes to tell everyone Yuletide felicitations, happy Holidays, merry Christmas, happy Hanuka, and a... thoroughly satisfactory Kwanzaa. Don't expect just a whole lot of posts for the next day or two, what with all the family fun I, and I'm sure John as well, have planned.

"I'll take that bottle of Hennessey you got on your shelf / so just let me introduce myself"

Be safe, eat some goose, and watch that Christmas movie with the BB gun 300 thousand times. Like your supposed to. Check back with us soon for updates on New Years fun, and everyones favorite part of the yearly change, top ten lists.

let me introduce my release date - luther (dallas,tx)

I don't know if other people think this is entirely blog worthy, but for someone who has been to several record stores trying to track down a stray copy of Let Me Introduce My Friends by I'm From Barcelona, or even their EP,  Don't Give Up On Your Dreams, Buddy!, that came about quite a while ago, as I did, it's good news.

American distributer Mute US, part of Mute North America, has announced the delivery of many many shiny packaged copies of the new full length album to the US shores on March 6, 2007. So I don't feel so bad about holding off on those overseas shipping charges. The CD will have the same track list as the European release, so keep an eye out and listen to this MP3 if, by some strange twist of fate, you havn't got it already.

some more christmas junk - luther (dallas,tx)

It would seem, in my experience, that when a cool musician decides to do a traditional Christmas performance, no matter how great it sounds in theory, most of the time it somehow fails miserably and completely. So, here are some more traditional musical ventures for you to get in the Christmas Spirit around the DFW metroplex on, what is looking to be a beautiful Thursday night:

Both seasonal and campy, Tubas and Christmas! It's people with Tubas playing Christmas songs. It doesn't really get simpler than that. It's a core of touring tuba players and volunteer local players who get together, practice for a day, and then play a show at night. I'm sure that right now, somewhere, there is a terrible, terrible noise. - Free or $5 a person.

A Dallas staple almost a year old now, the Electric Campfire Acoustic Jam is tonight, and every Thursday at Sons of Herman Hall. I hear it's cool, though I haven't been yet, and it might get you in the mood for Christmas. Amateur and professional players come together to jam and share songs, I'm assuming, around a campfire, though it might only be metaphorical. Look for some local singer songwriters you might know, I hear it's a popular hang out for a lot of them. - free

I'm only including this concert because it's at a Public Library and the listing includes nearby drink specials, implying that you should get hammered and then go to the Library. Well, thats what I get from it. Holiday Bells at the Hurst Public Library, Hurst - free. I do loves me some bell music, though.

This isn't so much a Christmas show except that it's to benefit and orphanage for Christmas, so I'll include it. I'm not really recommending these bands, since I've only heard the second one and don't have any real opinion of them at that. Little Black Dress and titanmoon at the Doublewide. If nothing else, you give $5 to a charity and drink a bunch of Shiner. - $5

I know it's limited, but there are a few and you can only drive around looking at rich peoples over the top Christmas lights for so long. So get out there and make Christmas happen, damn it, because, like laundry and you tax return, your parents wont do it for you anymore.1

fun fun fun fest- year one of many to come - john (austin,tx)

Quintron and Miss Pussycat was the best thing at the festival.  Hands down.  My crappy picture doesn’t do them justice.  I have been intrigued to see them forever because of their legendary stage show and when it finally magically happened I was blown away. Basically it’s a one-man band with a lady with funny clothes who dances, sings and waves around puppets, maracas and tambourines.  The music has been referred to as “Swamp-Tech” due to its hybrid of Louisiana swamp music and it’s Detroit Electronica.  That definition leaves out the brilliant wackiness and artiness of the whole experience- but it will have to suffice. Quintron and the lovely Miss Pussycat had the electronic music tent more involved and more dance crazy than the great DJ Mel and Prefuse 73 combined.

I missed all of the shows during the day but out of the evening headlining acts, Peaches was not as good as the records and same goes for Spoon.  Please don’t hate me.  I am a simple man.  I want my Peaches to be driven by drum machines and electoclash synthesizers… not Joan Jett cock rock.  I want my Spoon to have amazing piano- not a keyboard set to the piano setting nestled right between Electric Piano and Pipe Organ.  I want to blame the cold weather for what was lacking with Spoon, but Peaches didn’t have any problem running around the stage and humping speakers wearing next to nothing- so there goes that theory.

Despite really only being blown away by Quintron and Miss Pussycat - I still had a fantastic time at Fun Fun Fest.  There was a great vibe to it, hardcore gutter punks there for the Circle Jerks coexisting with neo ravers there for the Dirty South Ravers. And of course, all sorts of Austin residents like myself who are conditioned to go to every festival that our fair town has to offer.  Nonetheless, there was unspoken solidarity of cold people who love to see cheap, good, live music.  I am really impressed and proud of this little festival that could.  I love the Big Boys referencing name, I love the DIY attitude it had in promoting it, and I love that Tom Petty was nowhere in sight.  I read in the Austin Chronicle that festival organizer and Emo’s employee Graham who put the whole on, had time to stage dive off the punk stage.  That makes me very happy.  I am anxiously awaiting the next year’s lineup, which, due to this year’s inaugural success, has already been cleared to take place on a Saturday and maybe even be in November rather than December.  Love it.

more christmas goodies - luther (dallas,tx)

Well, I said I would keep y'all updated on Christmas gatherings of the musical kind, and here is one that you should not miss. Some of our favorite Dallas peoples over at Lollipop Shoppe are throwing a shindig at one of our favorite venues, The Cavern, on December the 22nd. For a mere five bucks you will see The Strange Boys (local garage rock kids that reportedly put on a great show), The Shapes, and DJ Pandaflower with the Lollipop Shoppe Go Go Girls and visuals by Cavern regular Zoo.

So, like those sad old ladies with lots of cats, give a Christmas gift to yourself on Friday. It's 21 and up and doors are at 9, so spread some cheer, drink some lonestar, and see a good lineup on the cheap, cause thats what Christmas really should be about.

waco - luther (dallas,tx)

Hailing from  the nearby (to both John and myself) town of Waco, a name fraught with the stigma that will always endure, thrives a music scene that never ceases to surprise me. Quite a few youngsters from in and around Baylor University have come together to produce what is a slowly evolving Waco sound, rooted in shoegaze and 90's indie rock, with smatterings of growing up listening to Biggie and Tupac. While most of these talented youth steer in the direction of indie-pop and post-punk balladry, a few side projects and collaborations have produced some riveting and original hip hop.

One of the most intriguing and truly original sounds I've heard of late is American Sasquatch. Composed of Jared Himstedt and a favorite of Party Ends Reeve Hunter - who has his fingers in many, many pies - the sound is lo-fi (as of yet being in demo stages) but still lush with juxtaposed instruments and a flow all it's own.

Composed of trashy beats, acoustic guitar, flutes, and all sorts of other instruments, this ethnically inclined indie rap is both interesting and substantial. The subject matters vary, but border on the existential; relationships, cooperate takeover, and the depth and strain of modern living.

Like most other bands out of Waco, the music also has religious undertones, and sometimes overtones. Never really distracting, or aggressive, it only serves to add another level of personal input from the artists.  Check out these tracks and see for yourself; I can't wait to hear these songs picked up and really polished:

On a much lighter note, but in the same scene, is another hip-hop bunch by the name of Sparrow Love Crew. I had a CD these guys cobbled together in their college dorm rooms back several years ago, also containing substantial input from Reeve and consisting of spliced 8 bit Nintendo themes, phat beats, and comical lyrics. Since then, the lineup seems to have changed a bit, and the fidelity has been raised, but the magic that made me listen to the 8-track recordings over and over till I knew every word are still there. I hope these guys really go somewhere, because they deserve it. In fact, I'm almost shocked they aren't signed yet. I'm with you all the way guys, just maybe use the Mega Man theme again, that was awesome.

Oh yeah, I can't belive I found it on You Tube, check out this Sparrow Love Crew video by my good friend Chris Rose. This was on that old CD I had, it's incredible! They should totally keep this one.

christmas cards for everyone! - john (austin,tx)

Time to send out those Holiday Greeting cards!  We took the time to look up some of this year’s most deserving recipients of you, your family, and your animals in postcard form.  What are another few bucks in stamps to let your favorite corporate rockers know that they are in your thoughts?:

Be sure to mention that you love how that one song about dancing is being used to push that Play Station karaoke game on TV!  OMG, that bass player is all I want for Christmas.  Teehee.  Maybe he’ll try to come down my chimney and get stuck and die like that dad in Gremlins.

I know these boys would love to get a holiday card from you because they are young and think Santa is real.

Getting your special season’s greetings would give the girls a good excuse to learn how to read.  Who knows, you might get added to their list next year and recieve a bunch of topless dolls posing around a tree, or better yet- Snoop Dogg with a Santa hat on!

Merry Christmas Justin.  The holiday season is a sexy synchronized dance to the warmth in everyone.

the laughing and dressy bessy- john (austin, tx)

The Laughing recording has almost, finally been mastered! You may almost rejoice, intraweb surfers. You are reading it here first that the Laughing is going to be the next big thing. The band is doing everything right. They recorded with the best of the best: Cacophony Studios. They never have to worry about what to wear to shows because they have turquoise and white uniforms. They never have to worry about things getting too out of hand at shows because they have a giant tiger on stage with them at all times. The band needs to prepare for the batshit insane praise they will be getting once the mastered EP hits the Internet.

Decked out in matching outfits based around a basic theme: that a white tiger with a single teardrop is brilliant and funny… in that order. The band excels at grabbing the audience’s attention, visually and then keeping the interest peaked audibly. At each show there are more and more fresh faces so it is truly notable how the legacy is already grown this much without the all too important MP3.

Watch out world. You feel in love with the Unicorns, they broke up, and now you have the Laughing. Yes, it’s that good.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The last Laughing show at the Mohawk was a coveted opening spot for twee pop darlings Dressy Bessy. They touched on tons of good stuff from their expansive catalog focusing mainly on their newest- Electrified. Dressy Bessy mometarily made me think it was summer again. Cheers to that.
More pictures will be up soon…

sentimental tacky crap- john(austin,tx)

Rob: “Should I bolt every time I get that feeling in my gut when I meet someone new? Well, I've been listening to my gut since I was 14 years old, and frankly speaking, I've come to the conclusion that my guts have shit for brains.”

There is a Morgan Freeman like god of justice and ethical taste I suppose. I talked before about the High Fidelity Broadway musical being a blasphemous insult to all that which is wholesome and now I can rest easy at night.

The $9.75 million Broadway musical High Fidelity will close just one month after opening previews were staged and ten days after its official premiere.

The New York Times critic described the show as one of the "all-time most forgettable musicals." Opening night, the theatre was half-empty.

Top Five movies I love that I never want to see ruined in any way shape or form unless it’s me doing it with drunken friends:

1. Almost Famous
2. The Royal Tenenbaums
3. The Birds
4. Bowling for Columbine
5. Sin City

Top five movies that Broadway should jump on and bastardize into musical incarnation and that will ultimately fail:

1. Snakes on a Plane
2. Schindler's List
3. The Shawshank Redemption
4. Hotel Rwanda
5. Oldboy

we shot jr & art prostitute - luther (dallas,tx)

Hey DFW peoples, don't forget to check out this really cool show tonight at Party Ends favorite gallery, Art Prostitute in Deep Ellum. Along with We Shot Jr., another site we are quite fond of, this should be a pretty swank shin dig. Go take a look see, buy a cool indie comic, and look like your way hipper than you actually are. It works, I swear.

this post is brought to you by the letter g - luther (dallas,tx)

If you have been reading and listening to what we here at Party Ends have to dish out for a while, you might recall a mix that we put out a few months back; the second song in there was a track off a little 8 track disc we ended up with at the close of last SXSW. The only really descent song on the CD, when I first heard ABC, by Coco Solid, I was instantly entranced by the simplicity of the composition, the lo-fi dirtiness of the sound, and, of course and as always, the outright crudity of the lyrics. Not only effective and clever, but heart warmingly forthright.

Hailing from New Zealand and sporting what I assume are character avatars, Coco Solid, Erik Ultimate, and DJ Han are cold blockin' it and ready to step. Following in the footsteps of classic rap themes, and pushing it with ironic, over the top clichés, and dirty, silly lyrics, the music has everything you could ask for, and nothing more. There isn't any frilly icing, just solid beats, tight rhymes, and effective orchestration. Listen to these tracks and you will want to do it, ABC with me:

Vice, Laughing, Rub, Rinse, Repeat. - john(austin, tx)

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

We are big supporters of the Vice DVD “Vice Guide to Travel” for a myriad of reasons: It has guns, radioactivity, balie funk, and people who talk funny (read: different than me.) Ah, to be American. Check out the trailer! PartyEnds screened it at the Alamo Drafthouse in November and now Red River mainstay Beer Land is screening it tonight for free at 7pm. Check out the new and improved Beer Land Website here and rest assured that come this March- Beer Land will have some of the best SXSW day and night shows in town.

Be sure to check out the laughing at the Long Branch Inn this Thursday for the Misprint holiday shindig, which is sure to be the place to have your new Zune made fun of.

Also coming up in Austin of note is this Saturday at the Beauty Bar. New York Mash-up party DJ’s the Rub are playing for free! I can’t wait. Download all sorts of great remixes and mash ups from the Rub HERE!!

See you around! Thanks for stopping by!

the onion's corporate expansion - john (austin,tx)

I have mentioned before on the site that the Onion is now alive and well in Austin Texas but it deserves stating again: The Onion is available all over the place in fancy printed text.  It’s like holding the Internet's superlative comedy site right in your fragile petite hands. Emo’s hosted was the HUGE and free Onion Launch party.  They fully utilized both stages and multiple bar setups with great success.  The Onion is now in Austin in full force.

(Info graphic from theonion.com. and yes, all the files in this post are cleared.)

KidIndie DJ'd the inside stage along with some of the Onion writers and outside some the best Austin bands and one of the best New York Comedians performed.   Things kicked off with the incredible Tacks, the Boy Disaster. The band sounded as good as ever and if Texans weren’t such pussies and could have handled the 25-degree weather for an outside show, more people would have been there to support them.  A time will come in the near future where Austin residents will be kicking themselves for missing a free Tacks show. The keyboard layers, the polyrhythms and the haunting vocals make this one of my favorite Austin bands.  The music is as beautiful at times as it is rocking.  Up next were the Lemurs.  Interesting first two bands the Onion… lets see, why does this lineup sound familiar?  Oh yeah!  Both bands played our Summer Extrav-0-ganza party! Ah summer… we hardly knew ye and now you are far, far away.  The Lemurs played some new songs and improved greatly on the old ones.  It is refreshing to see the band develop from show to show.  They have one song with a riff that is right out of “Dancing with Myself” that I still love the best.

Eugene Mirman gave an edgy set full of jokes about rape, Jews, and myspace.  Three things that comedians are constantly pushing the limits of.  Despite being the only act on the bill not armed with a guitar, Mirman won the crowd over and kept things interesting with a change up of pre-recorded video sketch gags, audience participation and overall absurdity.

Then IV Thieves played and I didn’t care to see their silly eyeliner, so I left.

Overall the crowd that endured the cold that fateful Thursday night had a great time!  So far the Onion is bowling a perfect score in Austin and I look forward to more amazing events from them in the future.

lets push things iforward - luther

So, the other day I mentioned iForward Russia! being one of the better bands we saw last SXSW, so I thought, even though they have claimed a fair amount of success already, and there is a good chance that you've heard of them, I would enlighten those who might not have been so fortunate thus far.

At the Super! Alright! party last year (another two exclamation organization), iFR! blew us away with their sound, their stage presence, and their matching tee-shirts. Now, flapping around on stage while still delivering a solid vocal performance is one thing; but mixing big rock sounds with synth laced electro dance music, funky bass lines, and varying intra song tempos at the same time makes it quite another thing. They were the talk of the town, thought I didn't catch their showcase, I'm sure they went even more 'all out' for that.

photo by Brooklyn Vegan: iForward Russia! actually at the Super! Alright! party, SXSW 2006

These Brits bring the pent up aggression, where tight funk falls apart into spastic shotgunned notes and beats, only to have the drawstring pulled and everything snapped back together again. With an original sound, still accessible, and an arthouse-esqu theme (almost every song title is just a number, eg. Nine, Fifteen Part 2, etc.), these guys could pull this thing all the way. Go check out their Myspace and listen to is remix, it doesn't do justice to the live show, but it don't slouch on entertainment by itself either:

MP3 - iForward Russia! - Nine (Napoleon III remix)

And, here is their new music video that is up in a contest on MTV2.com for best video on Subterranean, so check it out and go vote here if you like it:

pan's labyrinth - luther

Ok, I don't know about you, but I am more than excited about the soon to be released Pan's Labyrinth. I don't care what anyone says, Hellboy was great and one of the best treatments of a comic book ever, second only to V for Vendetta, and Blade II was actually pretty descent (and also related to a comic book); add the critically hailed Cronos and the (so I hear) studio hacked Mimic, throw in a handful of other Gothic masterpieces in Spanish including The Devils Backbone and Guillermo Del Toro has a pretty descent track record.

With a big budget and some obvious creative room, this thing looks fucking insane. I'm surprised there isn't more hype surrounding this release, due later this month, but what I have heard is nothing but laud and praise. Check out this trailer and tell me you don't wish you could see the whole thing right now:

Video - Pans Labyrinth trailer

Plus: In researching for this, I also came across the excruciatingly exciting news that Del Toro already has Hellboy 2: The Golden Army in production, is working on an adaptation of Ronald Dahl's The Witches, and will soon be working on an adaptation of one of my favorite H.P. Lovecraft stories, At the Mountains of Madness. Man, this guy has taste.

snowden tonight - luther

Hey, don't forget that tonight at the Gypsy Tea Room is Snowden, a pretty hip, dancy Georgia outfit, but just as importantly, if not more so, is Forward Russia, the opener. FR was one of the better live shows we saw last SXSW, a schizophrenic, twitching, electro audial attack on your senses. I would suggest you catch this show if you can.

Also, if you don't have, like, Church or something, go see Snowden at Good Records for an instore today at 3pm.

bliss out recap - john

Red’s Scoot Inn is a tejano bar in east Austin that has an outside area that can be rented out for cheap and you can do whatever you want more or less at it while the bar carries on with it’s normal tejano East Austin activities inside.  At the first of a series of concerts currated by local music champ Miguel entitled Bliss Out!  The venue was kind enough to unplug the jukebox and allow a PA with the sounds of MEJETAIRLNER, STHIL, Operator, the Serious Daters and DJ sets by STAY GOLD take over.  We told you about this last week so here we are back with some pictures and a recap.

After Stay Gold warmed up the Lone Star guzzling crowd, MEJETAIRLINER took over armed with a Mac Book and a slick sequencer type thing.  (Forgive my gadget ignorance)  The one-man electronic outfit walked a fine line between Shoe Gaze and Drum n Bass that was interesting and provided a lush and thick sound scape to a room that typically gets lots of Accordion n Bass.  I would love to see MJA again, as my first exposure to it was quite positive.

STHIL (Search The Heavens If Lost) is comprised of a young couple who dance, sing and have more energy than most performing musicians.  Energy and enthusiasm really goes a long way for me; with STHIL I found myself completed captivated.  Armed with a sequencer, keyboard and live vocals the two popped and bopped up and down, interacted thru the crowd and more or less performed most of the choreography of Roxie Hart (who killed her boyfriend when she discovered he wasn't going to make her a star) from Chicago. With that jazz performer mentality the duo had a LOT to bring to their finale, Saturday Night Live’s epic cowbell sketch anthem: Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper.”  Cowbell and all, the band made my head nod their entire set.  Stream their album here.

Operator drew the most people; their buzz around Austin has been unquestionable.  A violinist, bass, guitar, all sorts of synthesizers and a female singer make the band very accessible to a variety of interests.  The band is young in that they have not played very much out, but where they have played has been notable.  Almost immediately they have had shows at Emo’s and the Mohawk.  Their synth-pop styling is danceable and enjoyable and the word is spreading as eyebrows are raising all over. There were minor sound problems that seemed to really disenchant the violinist of the group who wasn’t able to perform for the beginning of the set.  The vocals are striking and accompany the keyboard perfectly to achieve a Stereolab type sound.  I would love to see Operator again in a better sound environment and when they are 100% “on.”

The Serious Daters had a headlining spot on the lineup and only the lead girl showed up.  Way to be professional and ahem “serious.”  The member who showed, Laurelin from the Shells, played a handful of acoustic guitar love songs that were endearing and cute, I would love to have heard them more fleshed out though… next time around I suppose.

the onion writers forum with patton oswalt! - john

The Onion has been the most consistently funny thing on the Internet for years.  Now they are distributing their paper in Austin and to kick off their corporate expansion they threw down for some amazing entertainment to let everyone in town know  “we’re here, we love lone star beer-get used to it.”

Last Wednesday night at the downtown Alamo Drafthouse there was a forum of four of the Onion’s top writers moderated by the great Comedian of Comedy Patton Oswalt. Patton warmed up the crowd with an amazing set full of riffs on Star Wars Prequels, KFC Chicken Bowls and an amazing 1977 movie that was just released on DVD calledDeath Bed: the Bed That Eats. The forum was extremely funny as the writers touched on “the process,” people thinking that the paper is real and an extra great fact that the White House tried to get them to cease and desist using the presidential seal by saying that it was illegal- when in fact it is very legal.  The New York Onion staffers showed some great Texas articles from over the years poking fun at Austin’s love of hacky sacks and BBQ.  They also added some fresh perspective to the ongoing Michael Richards scandal.  Their verdict is that the guy is just an asshole.  “If a girl had heckled him he would have screamed the C- Word over and over again.”

I woke up the next day still grinning about some of the Patton Oswalt jokes.  I told everyone at work about them, I went out and rented Death Bed: the Bed That Eats although I have yet to watch it… I could rant about how inspiring and hilarious he set was for a long long time.  He was in Austin recording a new live comedy album over at Capitol City Comedy Club so keep an eye out for that in the future.

this week at the mohawk - john

The word is starting to get out. PartyEnds has known since Austin City Limits that the coolest new club on Red River is The Mohawk.  They have consistently been booking diverse, engaging and solid lineups that make it tempting to spend lots of money and time there.  This week is no exception.

Wednesday night is a new DJ night with all sorts of local hotshots in the mix with Cut Club. The Mohawk is 18 and up so in theory, this stands to be a very big dance night, the likes of which have never been seen on Red River.  And rightfully so.  There is some real talent in the Cut Club mix.

Thursday night Earl Greyhound comes in all the way from New York City with their led Zepplen drums and their guitar amps that go to “11” to rock Austin on a weeknight.  For me, the real reason to head out is the chance to see the excellent accompanying acts: the Early Tapes and the Paper South.

I first heard about The Early Tapes from their live recording they did over at KVRX. Click here to check out some pictures and to download a track from the rocking and rolling set.

The Paper South is made up of members of Winslow and (my favorite music to listen to at work) The American Analog Set!  Their debut EP is currently available at End of and Ear and Waterloo Records.  Several tracks are available for FREE download here.

I highly recommend the Paper South.

Friday night at the Mohawk is a great looking AMODA show with DAT Politics and DJ sets by Austin’s number one ItaloDisco experts Majora y Minora

Then finish off the week with the amazing sounds of PartyEnds favorites Clap!Clap!.

Clap! Clap! could very well be every hipster in America’s favorite band.  Once their new recordings come out, some serious heads will start to turn nation wide.  They have slimmed their lineup down and are focusing less on the !!!-style dance punk and more on the Faint-style Electro Dance Punk.  As far as fun bands go they are rivaled only by Peachcake and as far as clapping goes… well, no one can come close to the sheer skills of band member/ master clapper Doug Hanshaw (shown below in mid reverse helicopter clap.) Clap! Clap! is a continually exciting show and are sure to make you shake your rump.  The sound system at the Mohawk will ensure that your rump will shake weather you want it to or not.

So that is my garrulous rant about the Mohawk this week.  The club is infested with cool bartenders, DJs and bands almost every night of the week.  Almost every aspect of the renovations they have put into the club has come from recycled materials so you have to love that.  Lone Stars are cheap, they have outdoor heaters, and a fireplace inside.  There is nothing else like it on Red River.  See you at the Mohawk.
