gamblers... - john (austin,tx)
Thanks to Vice and the Scoot Inn for hosting the Riverboat Gamblers for free and to Budweiser for the free booze. I entered that Harley Davidson drawing and, come September- I better be the winner of the free Nightster Hog because I could really use the money after I turn around and sell it. First things first tho, I am going to get together my old friends John Travolta and Martin Lawrence and we are going to go on a wild and latently homosexual cross-country hog spree to regain our youth. But hey- right after that- I’m selling that shit.
I had not properly seen the Gamblers in all their crazy energetic glory and so that Friday night I had a smile permanently affixed to my face. A smile that sprung from the memories of listening to new school punk bands years ago in middle and high school. A smile that comes from watching a frontman jump off a rusty roof of a building across the crowd from the stage. A smile that came from seeing some good old fashioned well-done punk rock crowd surfing.
Front man Mike Wiebe makes for the best live punk show I have seen since the (now defunct) Yuppie Pricks. The hour long set-list seemed to go on forever although I had no concept of time as I was mesmerized by a skinny man jumping off amplifiers, throwing water and chugging audience members beers. The moment a Stooges cover band starts to form on the Austin Craigslist musician message boards- I know just the guy to stand in for Iggy.
The lens of my camera by no means captured the call and response amazingness of the Riverboat Gamblers, but you can get the idea by clicking here.
