Is it too late to talk about Dan Deacon again? Yeah, we’ve been doing it since SXSW when he played our day show, and with his recent American tour marked by Pitchfork drool, andeBay hypercolor shirts- he’s been getting plenty of attention huh? Hmmm…
Oh! Oh! I’ll tell you what hasn’t been getting the proper praise though- tour mates Video Hippos! If Deacon shacked up with my boys in Japanther the Video Hippos would emerge from the boisterous megaphone womb as a neon glasses wearing band baby who was tragically addicted to Supercool.
Utilizing fuzzy treble and unrelenting drums, Video Hippos make their debut album Unbeast the Leash (get it – it’s a play on words just like Deacon’s Spiderman of the Rings- oh B-more- you so crazzzzy) totally fun.
Projections of fucked up cartoons and home movies that would give Bob Saget an epileptic seizure round out the band's live performance. Video Hippos take the punk aesthetic of not caring how it sounds or if you can understand the words and add Nintendo loops and Battles-esq chipmunk vocals to ultimately create a rich and animated album.
