astronautalis and man fest are upon us- john

Tonight= the Mohawk.  Easily one of the most interesting bands in Austin- Transmography will perplex the crowd with how much sound they make and impress them as well with how mathematically well it is pulled off.  These two guys could not be a more impressive band playing a more distinctive type of music.  The Listener Project will uplift and entertain with the minimal technical instrumentation underneath the lyrics of a true neo-poet.  And they are from Arkansas, so as Matt Besser would say- Woo- Pig Sooie.

Finally, Astronautalis brings his glitchy electro beats with the earnest lyrics of a soulja boy with a broken heart of gold.  His albums are listenable time and time again but it is his live shows that assure me touring acts are still worth a damn.  To be an intimate part of a one of kind freestyle rap is a unique way to truly connect to a performer.  Astro shows are always a ‘you had to be there’ conversation waiting to happen.  The inside Mohawk stage tonight will be more fun than the Crank 2: High Voltage wrap party.

Tomorrow – it is all about MAN FEST.  You have know idea how cool this is going to be.  GOLDEN BEAR! Knife Throwing!  Arm Wrestling! OutWithMe taking party photos!  Annie Ray taking lumberjack portraits! Free DeWars Scotch!  Free SteamWorks manbrews!  Free Sweet Leaf Tea! Free Hot Dogs!  Free Veggie Dogs!  A Deep Fryer!  Martial Arts!  The Confideetes!  DJ Laser Donkey!  Good lord.  Wear your flannel.

Congrats to Joeseph who will be going to check out the SoundCheck Winter Showcase Saturday night at Emo's Lounge on us.  Stay tuned for more contest action next week!

rock band sounds bizarre- john

Even after reading Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney’s  take on the game Rock Band - I still don’t understand it.  Slate.com is still relevant after all these years and the article is DEF worth a read.

Add Sleater-Kinney as your myspace buddy so you can be the first to know if they ever to a reunion tour.

friday on my mind- john

Astro_friday_poster_450.jpg

Check out what the Onion has to say about the Astronautalis show tomorrow night!

“Indie-country-electro” rapper Astronautalis has shared the stage with everyone from A Tribe Called Quest to The Polyphonic Spree to Rancid, which indicates both how seamlessly he blends his indie-rock, IDM, and hip-hop influences and how schizophrenic the resulting songs are. “Meet Me Here Later,” from his sophomore album The Mighty Ocean And Nine Dark Theaters, is as good an introduction as any: Winkingly sentimental, it comes off like El-P sitting in with Built To Spill as remixed by The Postal Service. Also playing: Listener Project, Transmography.”

Preach it the Onion.  Preach it.

Also- check it out!  We are in print?!  The Austin American Statesman has validated this website with a blurb.  Pick up today’s XL section and cut this out and put it in your scrapbook or read the article HERE.

One last thing- Today is the last day to enter to win the pair of tickets to the Soundcheck Magazine Winter Showcase at Emo’s Lounge Saturday night featuring Mothfight, Micah P. Hinson and the Soldier Thread.  Email PartyEnds@Gmail.com with Mothfight in the subject line and roll the dice!

One of the most interesting music venues I ever saw a show in was the living room of a dude in and his wife in Austin where a potluck dinner sat in the adjacent dining room.  About 20 people were there to watch the what creator Listener dubbed the “Tour of Homes.”  Set up like a DIY touring circuit only the catch was it had to be in a home, no abandoned rave warehouses, no churches, no vfw halls.  Listener took the living room floor (after an intimate Astronautalis performance) and erected a giant screen behind him that played nothing but late late late night infomercials with a focus on the ones selling excessively large knife sets.  His solo show that night was an awe inspiring display of conscience rap and the fact that he pulled off an American tour in peoples homes, and had such bizarre knife footage made it clear to me that this is my kind of performer.

Now, Listener has added a drummer and another instrumentalist to back him and dubbed the new effort  the Listener Project.  Based out of Arkansas the deep and motivating songs act as lessons to lead better lives.  I can never get to into “slam poetry” but if you add minimal musical backings a la the Evens or early Mountain Goats you have yourself an extremely interesting sound.  He describes the sound as “talk music” which is really on the rise right now with Art Brut and the Hold Steady sweeping the nation, This up and comer really has his game tight and deserves your attentive eyes this Friday night at the Mohawk.  My goal is to get the whole project to come to Man Fest the next day to show off that sweet facial hair.
Preorder the debut Listener Project release Return to Struggleville here.

the Listener Project plays the mohawk friday night along with Transmography and Astronautalis.

dirty old man- john

Neil Young’s Harvest is one of my favorite albums. I am not a super fan- but I must say the obvious highlight for his life and when he stole my heart - was playing “Keep On Rocking in the Free World” with my boys Pearl Jam at the 1993 MTV music awards- a day that will live in awesome infamy.  (btw-  have you heard Eddie Vedder’s soundtrack for Into the Wild?  It’s not bad.  Not great but not bad. ) I digress from Pearl Jam nerdom. I do know that Young  put out some weird experimental stuff in the 80s , and many of his songs have been hailed as precursors to grunge and even punk.  So his records have spanned all sorts of genres but with his latest outing he settles nicely back into Harvest-like coziness.

The new Young release  Chrome Dreams II.  On one hand he sounds exactly the same as ever on every single song (in a good way) and on the other- the studio tricks and guitar methods of 2007 bring his style into a contemporary vain of music (in a less good way.) The 62 year old’s voice is as shaky and potent as ever. His rock country stylings are subdued and basically poetry over chunking guitar work.  You can check out some full songs for yourself on youtube at the following links.

Wouldn’t it be cheesy if I ended this post with something aobut still Rocking in the Free World?

a case of the mondays- john

I just got cold water from trying to install a washing machine sprayed all in my face so this seems like as good of a time as any to take a break and whip up a post.  This is a big week.  Today so far is lame- but oh how I long for this weekend.

Friday night we are pleased as punch to help bring our favorite performer in America Astronautalis back to the Mohawk for a very special show with the mustached feel good flow of the Listener Project (like listener but with acoustic Mountain Goats guitar) and the local stylings of the two person wall of proggy sound-  Transmography performing opening duties.  This is not a show to be missed.  Astronautalis is an American troubadour who can flow better than those roc-a-fella boys you hear so much of on the radio.  While Jay Z used  to (and maybe still does) sell kilos of coke, Astro used to (and maybe still does) play Warcraft.  Whose side are you on?

There is all sorts of magic happening on Saturday.  We have been working REAL hard to bring you a free daytime event at Birds Barbershop full of free scotch, beer and wieners in an event that can only be described as MAN FEST.  Come arm-wrestle strong men, watch girls dance to confidence rock, listen to DJ Laser Donkey (who, yes- owns the Over the Top soundtrack on vinyl) and have your lumberjack portrait taken by  Annie Ray.  We have more surprise up our flannel sleeves than you can imagine.  Festivities begin at 2 pm and wind down at 7.  The HUGE sounds of Golden Bear (a manly man’s man band) will play at 6pm so do not miss this FREE and ALL AGES event.

After that you have a few options.  You can hit up the Laughing (another quite manly band) and  Car Stereo (Wars) at the Beauty Bar where there will be a super drunk Santa or:

See MothFight at Emo’s Lounge for the Soundcheck Magazine Winter Showcase.  Abilene’s chosen son  Micah P Hinson opens along with the Soldier Thread.  Soundcheck is a free local rag best known for their amazing photography but is quickly becoming associated with booking amazingly fun showcases at Emo’s- their summer one was  the stuff dreams are made ofIf you would like to attend the Soundcheck show for FREE hit us up at PartyEnds@gmail.com with “Mothfight” in the subject line and a winner will be chosen at random on Thursday night.  As always, “random” means random- this time the names will be placed in my dryer (I can hook that up without water spraying in my face) and then selected by whichever one doesn’t catch fire. Good luck.

tday- john

I am thankful for my new house. According to Misprint- i am now officially part of the problem.
I am not thankful for Martha Stewart Brand Paint- it sucks. Never buy it.
I am thankful for that Clipse song Mr. Me Too. It makes me happy every time I hear it.
I am thankful for Golden Bear playing our Man Fest at  Bird’s Barbershop next week.  Much more on that later but know from the get go that there the event is free, features scotch, beer, veggie wieners and lumberjacks.  Oh yes.  There will be lumberjacks.
I am thankful that in 2009 there will be a Crank 2.

Happy Thanksgiving eve!  If you live in Austin and need something to do tonight- Stubb’s has it: Benko, the Boxing Lesson  and the Story Of.  Pretend you are a pilgrim and get your drink on at a rock show.  Happy t-day everyone.

rap by numbers -john

I don't know if this site is old news or not but damn- HERE LIES SOME FUNNY JUNK. I doubt you will believe me but i honestly had this very idea all on my own over the weekend, told a friend about it and was presented with someone doing it already and most likely - much better than i could have. So it goes.

Team Fabrication 5 was an utter success.  The rain behaved itself out of respect for the bands and the models- all of which played excellently and looked breathtaking. Prom Nite  started things off with plenty of energy and a good-sized crowd of onlookers- many of which where dressed to kill. The Laughing, as always impressed with their raw musicianship and sense of smutty fun.  Drummer Grant Van Amburgh consistently amazes me in terms of how he manages to squeeze cymbal triplets as fast and as often as he does.  TWBOD played all their classics and keyboardist and vocalist Amy Mitchell was able to continue on with the Team Fabrication fashion portion of the night by wearing an original Team Fab indie-Victorian dress thru their set.  It should go without saying that the runway portion of the evening was the pinnacle of everything a good time is cracked up to be.  Team Fabrication is composed of two designers who each had 6 models wearing their creations.  The ladies strutted down the runway, popped hips, smoked cigarettes avoided falling and best of all-  Miss Jay from Next Top Model was no where to be found.

Giant congratulations to the ladies for pulling off such a huge undertaking without a hitch! One can only assume that next year’s Fabrication will once again outdo itself.

There were about 20 high quality digital cameras on hand so expect to see lots of them over the next week but to start out with check out these.

Luther, The other half of Partyends, is one modest dude. Did you know that in addition to raising the bar on the poster design game around Austin he also holds the record for most consistent hours of Arrested Development watched in one continuous sitting? Check the next Guinness...Anyway- he has a dope art show all weekend.

If you live in Austin you should go see his array of posters and design work on display over at the SUPER!ALRIGHT! space off Chicon this Saturday and Sunday.  Imagine- seeing all of the glorious posters over down and to the right of this very post in person!  I imagine there will be adult refreshments there as well.  Also on display is the amazing paint on vinyl work of Single Frame’s Adreon Henry.  All of the East Austin Studio Tour viewings are free, open to the public and highly endorsed by your friends here at PartyEnds.

Also- be sure to make it out to the Mohawk later in the evening on Saturday to catch Fabrication 5, most notably (aside from the one time only amazing fashion show) are PE favs the Laughing and  Til We’re Blue or Destroy!  This is a exceptionally unique lineup that you will regret missing.  I know, I know, Aesop Rock and BlockHead are down the street at Emo’s – but will they will not be showing off indie party dresses of the future.  So there.

vampire weekend - luther

Oh New York, constantly and conversely providing us with some of the best and worst music at any given time, your constant churning has unearthed yet another potential contender in the indie-pop battle for the broad and fickle audience to which it appeals. Vampire Weekend, a great though misleading name, is a new upstart into the hipster-island-doowop aesthetic of recent years in some ways spearheaded, in my mind, by bands like the much more aptly named Islands and now even championed by the likes of Built to Spill.

Though early in their careers, I could see their sometime mix of reggae and tropical rhythms, pop sensibilities  and catchy melodies competing with geographic dopplegangers like the Dirty Projectors in no time. Rumors of thier live show being hectic and purely entertaining are widespread, so I would plan on checking them out as they roll through the Mohawk here in town later this month (Nov. 29th) and look for their first and self titled CD in January.

absolutely fabrication - luther

Hey Austinites, the nights are getting longer, the air is getting a little colder (though not much) and over the last few years this has not only indicated the coming of holiday meals and inevitable obligatory family time, but one of the best local fashion shows as well. Team Fabrication, known for their girl-centric indie-fashions and notable choice in events, are back at it again this year with a great line of clothes and an equally great lineup of music. Some of Austin's best acts, including Til We're Blue or Destroy and the Laughing will be supporting the holiday event of the year this weekend at the Mohawk (where else?) along with Crash Gallery and Prom Night and Dj's Car Stereo Wars and Rubix.
This isn't an event to be missed, seriously, so get on the ball, wear your best dudds, and we'll see you there.

houseclouds- john

Say what you will about the Liars and their bizarreo experimental rock but you have to give it to them for keeping their game often indescribably innovative.  Their self-titled album out on Mute Records is sure to top all sorts of the inevitable top ten lists right between whatever Animal Collective put out this year and the Radiohead mp3s.  In a successful effort to not grow stale or be forgotten in this crunch time of Oscar proportions, the group has a new 7 inch single for their track “Houseclouds” coming out on November 20th.  It has a brand new b-side called "Red Dirt" and a bonus nugget of juiciness in the form of a Tiny Masters of Today remix of "Clear Island." TMOT are indeed 'tiny' and odds are they are cooler than you and about 10-20 years younger. Stereogum calls it "kidz bop stoner rock," which has such a charming ring to it I can’t help but crack a smile.

Stream Houseclouds from Mute’s website HERE!

Check out the lineup for saturday's Team Fabrication 5 at the Mohawk! Once again the Mohawk is fully utilized with the staggering of radness inside and out:

10:30-11:00 The Laughing OUTSIDE
11:15ish or 11:30 Fashion show OUTSIDE

(art by Evan Hecox)

Krazzzy times down here in Austin these days. We are busy busy busy hustling for for your dining pleasure. You just wait and see..   Sorry the site was down- now it is up and that is what counts.  Also- the internet it lame.

Here are few quick updates: TUESDAY the 13th- the Blakes (from that town from Singles), White Denim and AusChron coverboys the Golden Boys are playing for FREE at the mighty Mohawk- no questions asked.   The Blakes share a record label with Austin's biggest BJM fans- the Black Angels and are excellent.

There is a badass little art exhibit over at 4 Walls Fine Arts by skatboard art extrodinarre Evan Hecox.  check out Sober from the Party's pics here. The show runs thru January 5th.

Lastly-  Wednesday night- check out Mr. Oizo, DJ Mehdi and Ocelot for free over at Atones and get your Ed Banger on.  Show is ALSO FREE but you have to RSVP here. also- if you own a Scion- you should try and get a free drink and see what happens.. actually, make it two because i will be thirsty.

pho pho pho tos - luther

(Erin from Team Fabrication and Chris from Car Stereo (wars))

I know that some of our readers weren't able to make it to this years Fun Fun Fun Fest for whatever reason / excuse (probably a lot of whining about 'not even living in Texas'). But, for those of you who didn't go, local photographer Annie Ray and the Austinist have a little treat for you.

A booth set up in the press tent (lavishly outfitted with vintage furniture, by the way) captured the comings and going of many notable musicians, journalists, and anyone else who happened to shamble into the area and look interesting. There's really not a dull shot here as you'll find portraits of everyone from Jason Hammel (Mates of State) to Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) to Will Sheff, to group shots like White Denim and the doomed Clap! Clap!. Check them out here, and look for more of Annie's work in the near future as she will be taking photo's at the upcoming PE sponsored Man Fest at Birds Barbershop. (stay tuned)

move on up- john

The brand new Alamo Ritz is a glorious achievement of modern man.  The best part is the nods to the space’s extraordinary past including seminal punk shows and classic movie posters. The décor alone makes it an instant cultural landmark to our fair town, add in a theatre that hosts celebrity guests and the absolute best in offbeat programming and we have ourselves a new and improved take on a 10 year old Austin institution. Congratulations to the alamo for moving on up!

The UCB Tour Co was a little below expectations at the early show, seeming perhaps like they were not that tight knit of a troupe but who knows – maybe it was the audience’s fault.  Some of the best laugh out loud moments where when they acknowledged how  offtrack a certain sketch had gotten.

So now on to tonight- here is what is up: a killer looking KVRX benefit at the best place on Red River to get a giant pint of Live Oak Big Bark- Club Deville. Former Zom Zom Pataphyics opens, then snarky Dream Girls the Carrots take over next. Check out some photos of this handclappingly great group at the PartyEnds Halloween show here. the House Hold Names bring the spirit of Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and crew to Deville’s limestone wall and finally the unapologetically Buddy Holly sounds of Leatherbag finish off the night.  Leatherbag is one of the most underrated bands in town right now and it takes and entity such as KVRX to highlight them properly.  The station is currently in the middle of a pledge drive and every little cent helps.  Just think- for the price you spend each month on Which Which sandwiches you could provide the proper funding to ensure that the latest Black Dice remix gets played in the middle of the night!   Donate now!  KVRX needs to move on up too!

don't think -john

(UCB co-founder Matt Besser)

UCB Tour Co is in Austin right now!  On both coasts the mighty Upright Citizens Brigade are teaching improv classes and hosting “fucked up” comedy shows left and right.  The 3 season long Comedy Central tv show is and forever will be my favorite show to ever grace the airwaves and therefore anything even remotely associated with it is a must. Season two is available at a fine retailer near you btw….

I can only imagine that if this traveling troupe is good enough for the Del Close loving founders to take on the country as agents of chaos then they are probably good enough for me.  It is not like they are pretending to be the cast of the show like some touring edition of Blue Man Group, High School Musical or Daft Punk- these will be performers apt at making it hard to get that Big Fat Veggie Pizza to stay in your mouth- what with all the laughter and all. In a few years you will look back at tonight and be amazed that you saw so-and-so before they had a subversive sitcom on CBS .

DONT THINK! Just come out tonight to see some of the best longform comedy in the world and check out the Alamo’s latest incarnation at the historic Ritz on 6th street.   There are two shows one at 7 and a drunker one at 9:45.
"If you do it, we see it. Always. We believe the powerful should be made less powerful. We have heard the voice of society, begging us to destabilize it.

white white white - john

                         (photo: recovering lazyholic)

Go figure: at FUN FUN FUN FEST White Denim was badass. These three dudes just get better and better. It is scary. At one point I turned around and realized why front man James Petralli’s witty stage banter had to do with being nervous… Because the group had amassed quite the crowd that was cheerfully taking in the Austin band’s garrote rock and roll. The band is consistently impressive due to their mastery of start/stop shake-rock, which alternates angular hammer-ons and finger strumming all stuck together by the free jazz punk stylings of drummer Joshua Block. So, a large outdoor festival can be added to the ever-growing list of venues that White Denim has musically lit ablaze. Next stop- top of the pops. Check out this video of White Denim from Hot Freaks ACL 2k7 from our friends over at SUPER!ALRIGHT!

dancing on stage is the new moshing - john

Girl Talk did it first and craziest. (above)  Car Stereo (Wars) did it thematically with pirates. (below) Diplo did it with underage future potential future strippers. (I didn't bother taking pictures of Diplo because you literally cou not see him from the crowd.)  Fun Fun Fun Fest displayed overall a new era of getting on stage with a dj and being part of the performance.  The stage dive is only momentary- why settle for that when you can stay on stage with a dj and show every one in the back how awesome it is up front and perhaps- demonstrate how to dance the solja boi.

Luther and I had a blast all weekend long at the festival.  Expect long drawn out rants about different aspects of it soon.  In the meantime peruse a few photos I took HERE and HERE. Also- keep an eye out on Austinist who were able to treat the event proper and take more pictures than jesus. I can’t wait to see them all!  Everywhere you went there were crazy telephoto lenses and bloggers thinking of ways to write that some band is “derivative of ________.” The festival was a complete and utter success, as I am sure every media outlet present will attest in the coming weeks.  The hybrid of punk, math, and dance rock was perfect. Throw in the best of Texas weather and you have yourself a grand ol' time.

Best set I saw: Girl Talk.

Amazingly honorable mention: MothFight, Okkervil River, Car Stereo Wars, and Final Fantasy. More later…

Happy Weekend! This video is amazing. God Bless When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth

a grand, grand buffet - luther

It's almost time, and I have to admit that I'm pretty damn excited about Fun Fun Fun Fest, as well should you be (assuming you live anywhere near the city of Austin, TX). Of the many acts that I'm super excited about, (including New Pornographers!) there are a lot of smaller acts that I think are worth taking the time to have a look at, weather you have heard of them or not. For instance, the laugh out loud rap dou Grand Buffet is most certainly not a show to be missed. Though you might have seen them as I have, supporting Of Montreal on their last few tours, you might not have explored their rather extensive catalog of truly funny, catchy and entertaining songs that can parallel irreverence and preachyness in equal amounts while still maintaining an air of Monty-Python-esqu silliness.

As I recall, their stage banter and presence was off the charts when I saw them take the stage in Dallas, and I doubt that we will get anything less this weekend. So check them out, as well as tons of other great musicians. If you don't have your tickets yet, go and get them, and John and I will see you there.

half price pAperchAse! - john

If you just have NOT gotten enough of that Halloweenie feeling make plans to come out to Red 7 this Saturday for an official Fun Fun Fun Fest Afterparty featuring a dark tinged experimental lineup that both satisfies the urge to see music with more angsty aggression than stage 1 and stage 3 will be offering but not necessarily as much as stage 2.  And hey- it is only 5 bucks with your Fun fun fun Fest wristband/ticket!

Austinites  Death Is Not a Joy Ride have a HUGE sound full of every oddball instrument out there that has a minor key or ornate setting. Their latest release the “Human Zoo” has the loving stamp of production approval of the potent John Congleton who will be headlining the night’s entertainment with the pAperchAse.  This perfect pairing complements each other in terms of proggy time signatures and an affection for concept albums.  I have yet to catch DINAJR live yet so I am very much strolling down from Girl Talk and catching some girl-fronted dark violin burlesque dance rock.  The MVSCLZ alter ego  Assacre will be dressed to the 9s and melting faces with his tape deck and ironic shredding. Stinking Lizavetta bring their “doom jazz” all the way from Philadelphia all leading up to the pAperchAse hopefully debuting the new material they hint about online…  also- hopefully they be able to contain their bodily functions better than they did at the Wall of Sound festival.  This afterparty lineup has me almost as excited as the whole festival.  Anytime the pAperchAse plays you should drop what you are doing, grab some earplugs and take in one of Texas’ best all-around musical groups.  Every piece of recorded music these guys put out is gold and each live show has more energy and uniqueness than that before it.  I can’t wait.

Congrats to PArtyEnds Fun Fun Fun Fest ‘Must See Act’ Mothfight for this nice little write up in the Daily Texan.
